FT: China delays approval of BYD Mexico plant over US fears

Chinese authorities are concerned BYD’s advanced smart car and electrification technologies could be shared with, or stolen by, the US. By Stewart Burnett

Chinese authorities have delayed approval for domestic electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD to build a previously-announced plant in Mexico, according to a 19 March 2025 report by The Financial Times. Citing “two people familiar with the matter”, FT indicated that fears of espionage by the US government or its automakers are driving the delay.
