Honda turns to AI, robotics to reduce costs in China

Honda aims to “reduce fixed costs as much as possible”, in other words reducing the necessary staff headcount by 30%. By Stewart Burnett

Honda is investing in robotics and AI to curb the need for human workers at its new electric vehicle (EV) plant in Guangzhou, China. In a 27 March 2025 interview with Nikkei, the automaker detailed its plans to use “electrification as an opportunity to overhaul the way we produce vehicles”, reducing the factory’s headcount by as much as 30%.
