Illegal or loophole? Renault emission discrepancies force the question

Far from dying down, emissions testing scandals appear to be reviving. In Europe, the focus has turned from Volkswagen to Renault.

VW's disclosure that it used defeat devices in some of its models sent governments and testing agencies investigating other OEMs to ensure their technology was not similarly violating standards. Renault came under the spotlight earlier this year after tests carried out by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), a non-profit environmental and consumer protection association. DUH claimed that its own testing of a Renault Espace 1.6-litre dCi found NOx emissions levels between 13 and 25 times over the legal limits.
