Centralised E/E architectures could unlock new opportunities to monetise vehicle data

As vehicle software develops, vehicle architectures will need to change. A well-managed transition could yield new revenue streams. By Jacob Moreton

The automotive industry has been shifting from a reliance on hardware to a new emphasis on software. In 2019, Volkswagen’s Chief Executive Herbert Diess predicted that software would make up 90% of future innovation in the car. “Today our 20,000 developers are 90% hardware-oriented. That will change radically by 2030. Software will account for half of our development costs,” he said.
